Breaking of a metastable string at finite temperature

چکیده
We consider the phase transition of a string with tension ε1 to a string with a smaller tension ε2 at finite temperature. For sufficiently small temperatures the transition proceeds through thermally catalyzed quantum tunneling, and we calculate in arbitrary number of dimensions the thermal catalysis factor. At ε2 = 0 the found formula for the decay rate also describes a break up of a metastable string into two pieces.

The spontaneous breaking of a metastable string
We consider the phase transition of a string with tension ε1 to a string with a smaller tension ε2. The transition proceeds through quantum tunneling, and we calculate in arbitrary number of dimensions the pre-exponential factor multiplying the leading semiclassical exponential expression for the rate of the process. At ε2 = 0 the found formula for the decay rate also describes a break up of a ...
متن کاملScreened potential and quarkonia properties at high temperatures
We perform a quark model calculation of the quarkonia bb and cc spectra using smooth and sudden string breaking potentials. The screening parameter is scale dependent and can be related to an effective running gluon mass that has a finite infrared fixed point. A temperature dependence for the screening mass is motivated by lattice QCD simulations at finite temperature. Qualitatively different r...
متن کاملSpontaneous and Induced Decay of Metastable Strings and Domain Walls
We consider decay of metastable topological configurations such as strings and domain walls. The transition from a state with higher energy density to a state with lower one proceeds through quantum tunneling or through thermally catalyzed quantum tunneling (at sufficiently small temperatures). The transition rate is calculated at zero temperature including the preexponential factor and also at...
متن کاملF-term SUSY Breaking and Moduli
We discuss the coupling of heavy moduli fields to light fields when the dynamics of the latter, absent such couplings, yields metastable vacua. We show that the survival of the vacuum structure of the local model depends nontrivially on the cross-couplings of the two sectors. In particular we find that for ”local” models (such as those realized by D-branes in type II string theories) with metas...
متن کاملString Breaking and Quarkonium Dissociation at Finite Temperatures
Recent lattice studies of string breaking in QCD with dynamical quarks determine the in-medium temperature dependence of the heavy quark potential. Comparing this to the binding energies of different quarkonium states, we check if these can decay into open charm/beauty in a confined hadronic medium. Our studies indicate in particular that the χc and the ψ ′ dissociate into open charm below the ...
